How We Do It

Optilan scopes of work include:

  planning

Preliminary Studies

Optilan prefers to participate actively in the project planning process from the earliest stages, helping to create elegant, workable solutions and ensuring that integration issues are addressed from the outset.

Systems Architecture

The result leads to a cohesive systems architecture generating standardised, fully defined interface design. Inconsistencies introduced through uncontrolled changes and ‘fixes’ at the detailed design stages, generating potential anomalies which feed through into operational inefficiencies and the generation of poor quality as-built documentation, are minimised. As less time is spent re-engineering poorly specified design, value is optimised.

Canal

Project Management

The Optilan Project Manager and his team control all aspects the project throughout, drawing upon specialist in-house skills from design and workshop engineering to H&S, documentation and civil works.

Integration

A typical Optilan integrated system would comprise:

  • A transmission backbone, often Optical Fibre (SDH) based but often integrating copper, microwave, or other media integrated to provide the most efficient, best value project solution.
  • The communications infrastructure - the provision of fibre optic and copper cabling services (including civil works), microwave towers etc.
  • The integration of subsystems, which may include CCTV, Telephony, Ethernet/IP connectivity, LANs, UHF/VHF/HF Radio, PA, Alarms, Access Control, signalling, SCADA, ANPR, satellite systems etc

Systems Build and FAT

Optilan has in-house Factory Acceptance and Systems Integration Test facilities, an extensive rack-build capability, and operates full bonded stores.

Optilan’s workshops are dedicated to rack building, cabinet fitting and field equipment assembly.  These workshops are capable of assembling anything up to 200 racks at one time.

Optilan’s FAT facility is equipped with a comprehensive range of voice, data, RF and fibre optic test equipment. Here, or in a dedicated secure FAT room in the case of some larger projects, systems are subjected to full FAT testing against agreed project-specific test specifications prior to shipment.

Site Engineering

Optilan’s Site Engineers travel the world installing, commissioning, maintaining and supporting integrated telecommunications systems and cabling infrastructure.

Optilan’s site engineering force comprise more than 50 Engineers with skill sets ranging from fibre cable splicing to CCTV camera build.

Maintenance and Support

Optilan provides 24/7 maintenance and support services for both turnkey systems and infrastructure, including dedicated telephone helplines, remote diagnostics and site engineering teams.

Training of Customer Engineers and indigenous personnel in first line support is undertaken, either at Optilan’s UK-based Training School, or on site, by Optilan’s highly skilled and experienced Training team.

Cabling Services

In addition to turnkey project work worldwide, Optilan’s  Field Engineering team is responsible for the ongoing maintenance, support and upgrade of major UK telecommunications infrastructures.

The Optilan Field Force is highly experienced in:

Civil Works Management

Optilan undertakes full Civil Works design, planning and management responsibility as Prime contractors for telecommunications systems infrastructures, from surveying to ducting, troughing and long-range tunnelling.

Working Together

Optilan believes that compliance should not adversely affect flexilibity of approach.  We see ourselves, our customers and their end-users as working together towards a single goal – the timely and cost effective delivery of the right solution.    Operating in partnership with customers (some customers operate a site office within Optilan itself, providing the fullest project transparency and promoting swift, informed decision-making as issues arise) Optilan believes in an open, pragmatic approach to problem solving, allowing innovative and effective solutions to grow out of positive discussion.
