Russion Permafrost Projects

Pic1Optilan was the first organization to install fibre based pipeline telecommunications backbones in the challenging conditions of the Russian permafrost.

South Shapkino – Komi Republic.

Design and supply of communications infrastructure for the South Shapkino Project, encompassing wellheads, process plant and export pipeline.

Optilan’s scope of work covered:

  • Design, supply and installation of a 15 node SDH STM-1 transmission system from end to end of the pipeline, which runs between Kharyaga and the South Shapkino field.
  • Supply and commissioning of 100 km of fibre optic cable throughout the length of the pipeline

The South Shapkino Field is located 70km from the Artic Circle.  Most of the pipeline was accessible in Winter only by an ice road (constructed seasonally) and in Summer only by helicopter.  Temperatures range between +30o c and -55oc, so all equipment and cabling was required to be appropriately resilient.

Polar Lights

Optilan also provided a fibre transmission backbone and cabling in permafrost for the Polar Lights pipeline in Russia’s sub-Arctic Timan-Pechora Basin.
