Optilan supports nuclear power industry in Brazil with Angra 3 contract award

UK-headquartered, Optilan, has been appointed by Framatome to design and supply modern electrical and mechanical security technologies. These will function to secure the Angra 3 nuclear facility.

The project is part of a multi-billion-dollar development to add a third nuclear reactor to the Angra site, located in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When operational Angra 3 will generate more than 12 million MWh per annum, which is enough to supply Brasília and Belo Horizonte cities.

The project, which commenced in June 2020, involves the supply of an integrated package, comprising both Electrical Physical Protection and Mechanical Physical Plant Protection systems. As part of the contract Optilan will provide a range of services for these packages. These will include project management, detailed design, system integration and factory acceptance testing. The design and fabrication works will take place at Optilan’s headquarters in Coventry, UK, prior to delivery to site in Brazil.

Commenting on the award, Bill Bayliss, CEO of Optilan said “We are proud to be part of this flagship project for Framatome. It is a project which has demanded an exceptionally close relationship with the customer to ensure that optimal solutions were delivered for exact specifications. And it is a great opportunity to showcase our skills developed over 30 years in the telecoms, security, and safety market.”

During the tendering phase Optilan proposed a robust, modern solution, showcasing the latest technology to meet the project requirements. This was the primary incentive for Framatome to award Optilan the contract.

This win furthers Optilan’s presence in the nuclear sector, with recent projects including Sellafield in the UK.
