Background
The West Midlands Metro is a light rail/tram system operating between the cities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton.
Optilan have been working with the team at West Midlands Metro on various telecoms projects since its opening in 1999. The team have extensive experience and understanding of the existing fibre backbone, telecoms system and working environment of the region’s Metro infrastructure and have worked directly with all stakeholders on numerous other projects for West Midlands Metro.
We were pleased to continue this partnership when commissioned for the design and installation of an optical fibre backbone for the second.
Optilan’s Approach
The optical fibre backbone followed the same principals of design that Optilan had already deployed on the first phase of the extension to Centenary Square . Optilan were responsible for:
• Detailed design
• Construction design
• Installation
• Testing and Commissioning
Optilan’s Scope of Work included:
• Producing and submitting RAMS, including survey docs
• Access confirmation with WMCA
• Survey of tram stops, substations and OMC
• Survey pack produced and submitted
• Fibre supply, installation and testing
The Result
The Edgbaston project was completed in summer 2022 with the client awarding full satisfaction awards across all areas of works.
The team did a great job from start to finish (pre-contract, award, design and delivery).
