Milestone Energy Development

Optilan was a key solutions provider in a game-changing development in the Caspian – one of the biggest and most complex energy projects undertaken anywhere in the world.

Background

Project: Shah Deniz 2, Azerbaijan

Client: BP (Shah Deniz) Limited

Scope summary: Integrated offshore/onshore telecommunications and security systems

Shah Deniz 2 represented a large-scale expansion of a giant gas condensate field in the Caspian Sea.

The development comprised a series of subsea manifolds and associated well clusters tied back to the offshore processing Shah Deniz Bravo production (SDB-PR) platform. The bridge-linked quarters and utilities (SDB-QU) platform provided power and accommodation.

SDB-PR was linked to shore by separate gas and condensate marine pipelines feeding a new onshore terminal facility.

The Remit

Optilan was contracted to deliver integrated offshore and onshore S systems for this first subsea development in the Caspian – one that would represent the starting point for the strategic pipeline network delivering natural gas from the Caspian direct to European markets for the first time.

The Optilan Approach

Optilan recognised the strategic importance of the development, not only to BP but also to the Azeri Government as it would facilitate the export of gas to Europe, and formulated a project strategy that reflected these imperatives.

It also acknowledged the importance of nationalisation and, accordingly, the project was resourced with an experienced team from both its UK and Azerbaijan offices.

The project solutions for SDB-QU and SDB-PR topsides comprised an integrated deck, assembled and pre-commissioned onshore as far as practicable, and installed by ‘float-over’ method onto the jacket.
