Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP)

Safeguarding Energy Infrastructures

Optilan provided multiple systems to help monitor and protect over 1,800km of new pipeline constructed to carry new gas supplies to Europe.

Project: Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP)

Client: ABB

Scope Summary: delivery of Pipeline Monitoring System as well as Leak Detection, Buried and Fence Intruder Detection systems

Background

The 1,814km pipeline project was developed to carry gas from the Shah Deniz 2 gas field in the Caspian – for which Optilan had provided integrated telecoms and security systems – to facilitate the provision of supplies to European markets.

The Remit

Design of the Pipeline Monitoring System (PMS)(both onshore and offshore), Leak Detection System, Buried Intruder and Fence Intruder Detection Systems (BIDs/FIDS) for sites along the pipeline. The solutions provided by Optilan would allow TANAP to monitor the entire length of the pipeline for intrusion, leaks and seismic activity, and to detect attempted intrusion at 63 sites along the route.

The Optilan Approach

Optilan set up a dedicated office in Turkey to act as the hub for the programme of site works for the project. It headed up installation supervision, commissioning, fine tuning, site acceptance and training. ABB initially provided 96 pre-built Rittal cabinets into which Optilan configured, tested and installed key OptaSense equipment. Optilan then undertook the configuration work and the individual Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), followed by a system FAT for the PMS and combined BIDs/FIDs systems.

The equipment was subsequently integrated with other systems – PMS, BIDs/FIDs, CCTV, Access Control, Tetra and Aeronautical Radio, PAGA, Weather System, Satellite Back-up Communications, Telephony and Main Network System – for an integrated FAT supported by Optilan engineers. All equipment was then transported to Turkey and installed in individual containers for delivery to locations along the length of the pipeline.

Optilan professionals undertook all systems commissioning and fine-tuning, followed by a Site Acceptance Test, Handover and Operational Support.

The Result

OptaSense equipment installed in the cabinets:

  • 130 Interrogator Units
  • 64 Processor Units
  • 34 Dual Processors Units
  • 55 Control Units
  • 130 Ethernet Controlled Power Supply Units
